Power Line networks are adapters which allow you to utilize the copper electrical wiring in your home as a network connection.
The Power Line adapters come in pairs. The first adapter will connect to your modem/router with an ethernet cable. The second adapter will connect to the device you wish to have internet access (ex: STB).
Both adapters plug into a wall outlet, and communicate using the house's electrical wiring system.
These are primarily useful when wireless interference disrupts wireless network signals or the router is too far away for a good connection.
Some areas have a lot of wireless interference from telephones, microwaves, wireless devices (surround sound sets), other routers, etc. The STB may not be able to connect to the wireless network well in an environment such as this. The powerline adapaters can help in this situation because it allows you to easily connect to the network from a different area of the house. This connection is a hardwired connection, without the of a physical ethernet connection running between the rooms.
